Expert tips
Swimming

Air: Lara can hold her breath for a long time, but not forever. Always be as quick as possible and go back for air after every task. Medipaks can be used in extreme cases.

Diving: Here's something you may not have known. Hold walk, forward and jump to dive. Diving propels you further, but is mainly for fun. Try pressing forward during the dive to flip around.

I'm sure that you all know how to run, jump, walk and look already, otherwise you wouldn't be here. So on this page you will find all the expert moves and strategies.
Gaps

Most of the gaps in Tomb Raider are a case of either walk to edge then jump or hop back, run then jump. But some can be a bit different.

Really long gaps: Often even a running jump will not let you reach the other side. Most probably, the jump is  impossible. But you should always keep trying. Remember that pressing action shortens a jump so you should press it as late as possible. There is one tricky jump in Chronicles in a lift shaft where you jump to a pole. Here you must press and start holding action during the run up to ever-so-slightly shorten the jump.

Ropes: From Last Revelation. Press action to grab on then R2 to swing. You can jump from rope to rope.

Poles: From Chronicles you can use a pole to significantly lengthen your jump. Just hold action to grab it, swing around at least 3 times then let go. Weee, there goes Lara.

Tightropes: From Chronicals Lara can use a tightrope to go across a gap. Just press action to get on then walk across and press left or right every time unbalances and makes a funny creaking noise (is this Lara or the rope?).

Spring boards: Currently only in TR2. These can be annoying, so only use them if you have to. For shorter gaps, step just in front of them and then run forward. For longer ones stand a square or two back.

Battling

All enemies in Tomb Raider are different, but most are killed in the same way:

Weapons: See choosing the right weapon

Avoiding attacks: In TR1 the easiest solution is to get to higher ground as enemies can't climb. After that, you can either find cover or jump around. I find that jumping from side to side works well.

Running: Of course, running all the time would result in a huge party of bad guys following you. But if you're near the exit or a long jump, there's no point in attacking

Friends: Be careful not to shoot every time Lara auto-aims, some enemies won't harm you and may help you out. Examples are the priests in the Monastery in TR2 and the soldiers at the Crash Site in TR3.

Mummies and skeletons: One word: grenade launcher. Alternatively, use the shotgun to knock them off a ledge.

Saving

Save often: To avoid having to do large sections again and again and again...

Save in different slots: Imagine saving in your only slot on the last level over a spike pit. Doh!

Check: To avoid the example above, if your about to save, spin around a few times, look everywhere and wait a few moments before you do it.

Cool moves

Here's a summary of all the cool moves in the games:

Dive: Forward + Jump + Walk. Forward to spin in air

Ledge flip: Crawl facing a drop. Press jump (TRC only)

Indiana roll: Sprint then press jump (TR3+)

Cool climb: Hold walk whilst pulling up to a ledge (contrary to a lot a statements, this has a point. Lara can climb up to a ledge with spikes on it safely).
